2012 International Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) Conference
Research into E-Assessment
10th & 11th July 2012, Southampton
Submission Deadline Extension to 7 May
- We have been approached by a number of authors requesting an extension to the submission deadline because of the Easter holidays. As a result we have decided to extend the call to Monday 7th May 2012. Authors will be notified of acceptance between 11th and 18th May depending on when they submit.
Keynote speaker
- We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for CAA 2012 will be Dr. Steve Draper.
- Steve Draper is an academic in the Psychology School at the University of Glasgow whose background includes research on HCI (Human Computer Interaction), IR (Information Retrieval), and using technology in learning and teaching. Steve is perhaps best known in CAA circles for his “clickers”, otherwise called Electronic Voting Systems or “gadgets in lecture theatres”.
Workshop
- We will be holding a workshop on the use of games and simulations in assessment at this year’s event. Please see below for further details.
Special issues
- The best papers from CAA 2010 have been published in a special issue of the International Journal of e-Assessment. You can access this special issue free of charge by registering your contact details at the IJEA website.
- The International Journal of e-Assessment is pleased to announce the second edition in the series of CAA Conference published materials. We continue to promote and support engagement with the Computer-Assisted Assessment Conference as an important source of research and informed debate. We are sure that this year’s conference will continue to provide valuable contribution towards the development and implementation of eAssessment within education at all levels of attainment.

A two-day research-led conference
organised by
Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton
and
Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University
The 2012 International CAA Conference is a two day research-led conference hosted by the University of Southampton and organised by ECS and the IET at the Open University. The Conference aims to advance the understanding and application of information technology to the assessment process (e-assessment) through rigorous peer-reviewed research. As in previous years, the conference will be of particular interest to those involved in the pedagogic and technical aspects of e-assessment and those involved in strategy, policy and implementation, such as managers and support services.

The Conference Proceedings from previous CAA conferences are available for free download. Please see ‘Proceedings’ tab.
Workshop: use of games and simulations for assessment
We will also be holding a workshop at this year’s event.
Games and simulations can provoke curiosity and stimulate engagement of students. They may also help students to overcome barriers to learning such as attention loss, confusion and frustration due to inappropriate difficulty level of the task. The uptake of games and simulations as learning activities is growing, although uptake has been slow for their use in assessment. There are many reasons for this, for example, the effort required and expertise needed to produce an effective game or simulation, and a general lack of understanding of how to develop games/simulations to be used in assessment. In this workshop, we would like to explore the use of games in assessment. Typical topics will be expected to include, but not be limited to:
• Evidence-based practice of games in assessment.
• Pedagogical considerations and frameworks.
• Patterns for games in assessment (development, use, etc.).
• Game play and assessment.
• Evaluation of games in assessment.
The language of the conference is English.
